#4: Better yet, make your own sauce
Even better than buying a good sauce? Making it yourself. It's surprisingly easy, and it's the best way to eliminate processing thickeners and emulsifiers while putting a cap on the sugar. Check out the recipe below. It relies on simple, inexpensive ingredients, it contains only a teaspoon of sugar per serving, and I can guarantee it’ll taste better than any of those $5 bottles on the supermarket shelf.
Grill This, Not That! Classic Barbecue Sauce
2 Tbsp butter
1 small onion, minced
1 cup ketchup
2 Tbsp brown sugar
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
½ Tbsp dry mustard
½ tsp paprika (preferably smoked)
½ tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp cayenne
Black pepper to taste
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion over low heat until soft and translucent. Stir in the remaining ingredients and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes until you have a thick, uniform sauce. Per Tbsp: 28 calories, 4 g sugars, 114 mg sodium
