At heart, Americans are still Puritans. When we do something bad, like eating decadent holiday foods, we tend to punish ourselves—with grueling workouts, restrictive diets and, more and more, “cleanses.” Living for a week on the Master Cleanse—a concoction of salt water, lemon juice, maple syrup and hot peppers—will make you regret ever accepting that holiday party invite. But the fact is, you don’t need a miserable (and expensive) “detox” regime in order to cleanse your body of the damage you did last weekend. There are a handful of foods—delicious ones—with impressive detoxifying properties. So hold the vinegar and cayenne andcleanse away the pounds, torture free. |
