Smoothies
The dirt: Real fruit smoothies sound healthy, right? The truth is most smoothies you buy packaged at the store or order at a restaurant chain pack enough sugar to rival the unhealthiest milkshakes. Take Baskin Robbins' Strawberry Banana Fruit Blast Smoothie, for example. Although it sounds healthy with its "live and active cultures," this drink contains a whopping 730 calories and 160 grams of sugar—enough to make your pancreas scream!
Fix it: Look for less sugar-laden restaurant smoothies, such as Baskin Robbins' small Peach Passion Fruit Blast (270 calories). The smaller size and change of flavor cuts the sugar content by nearly 100 grams. Better yet, whip up this kid-approved, metabolism-charging smoothie:
½ cup brewed green tea, cooled to room temperature
½ cup nonfat vanilla yogurt
1 cup mango
½ Tablespoon honey
1 cup ice (about 6 cubes)
Puree the fruit ingredients with the liquid, then add the ice and blend. 260 calories, 0 g fat, 61 g carbohydrates
