Dodge The Toxin That’s All Around You

dodge-the-toxin-thats-all-around-you_300The dust in your office, home and car contains a toxin that is lethal to your thyroid and probably causes cancer. Are you doing enough to protect yourself?
Research at the Boston University School of Public Health shows that the chemical known as TDCPP — chlorinated tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate, or “chlorinated tris” — is present in 99 percent of the dust found in homes, vehicles and offices, “demonstrating the widespread presence of this flame retardant in the indoor environment.” The chemical is a flame retardant removed from children’s pajamas 30 years ago but still used in polyurethane foam.
The scientists point out that the only good way to minimize your exposure includes:
  • Wash your hands, especially before eating.
  • Clean dust frequently, and don’t let it become airborne.
  • Keep the indoor environment well ventilated.
  • Use air purifiers.
“It is currently very difficult to avoid flame retardants. Hopefully, better options will become available in the near future,” warns researcher Courtney Carignan.
TDCPP may be neurotoxic. Increased concentrations in dust have been associated with decreased semen quality and reduced free thyroxine in men, suggesting possible effects on fertility and thyroid function. Animal studies show TDCPP is readily absorbed through both the skin and gastrointestinal tract.
