The Food That Can Give You Diabetes

the-food-that-can-give-you-diabetes_300If you want to shrink your risk of diabetes, researchers warn that there’s one common food you must avoid. These scientists have found that the countries that consume the highest levels of this food have the highest rates of diabetes. And the U.S. is No. 1.
The villainous food is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). It’s more dangerous to your health than normal sugar. The average American takes in more than a pound of HFCS every week. It is added to soft drinks and processed foods.
“HFCS appears to pose a serious public health problem on a global scale,” says researcher Michael I. Goran, professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC). “The study adds to a growing body of scientific literature that indicates HFCS consumption may result in negative health consequences distinct from and more deleterious than natural sugar.”
The research, performed jointly by USC and the University of Oxford, shows that out of 42 countries studied, the United States has the highest per capita consumption of HFCS at a rate of 25 kilograms, or 55 pounds, per year.
The second highest is Hungary, with an annual rate of 16 kilograms, or 46 pounds, per capita. Canada, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Argentina, Korea, Japan and Mexico are also relatively high HFCS consumers. Germany, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Egypt, Finland and Serbia are among the lowest HFCS consumers. Countries with per capita consumption of less than .5 kilogram per year include Australia, China, Denmark, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Uruguay.
“Most populations have an almost insatiable appetite for sweet foods, but regrettably our metabolism has not evolved sufficiently to be able to process the fructose from high fructose corn syrup in the quantities that some people are consuming it,” says researcher Stanley Ulijaszek. “Although this syrup can be found in many of our processed foods and drinks, this varies enormously from country to country.”

The Anti-Alzheimer’s Vitamin

the-anti-alzheimers-vitamin_300When Alzheimer’s disease robs your memory, it also shrinks the brain’s gray matter. But researchers at the University of Oxford have found that vitamin supplements may be able to slow this shrinkage.
The scientists found that when they gave B vitamins to elderly people who were starting to have memory difficulties, their brain shrinkage was reduced by more than 90 percent. In addition, they discovered that the brain areas that are most seriously impaired by Alzheimer’s, like the hippocapmpus and cerebellum, were most effectively protected.
“It demonstrates for the very first time that it is possible to modify the disease process in Alzheimer’s,” says researcher David Smith.

Prebiotic prevention
I sing the praise of probiotics all the time. These good bacteria nourish your gut--and in doing so, they fight disease from what is arguably the epicenter of your body's health.

But what nourishes the good bacteria? Prebiotics, that's what. And as one new study shows, they're just as important.

This randomized, triple-blind trial looked at close to 50 diabetic women. Half supplemented with 10 grams of a prebiotic called inulin every day for two months, while the other half took maltodextrin as a control.

Results at the end of the study showed significant drops in both fasting blood sugar and HbA1c levels among the group taking the prebiotic.

Researchers also observed dramatic spikes in antioxidant activity among the women taking inulin. And I don't think I need to explain why that's a major plus for anyone with diabetes.

Inulin belongs to a class of carbohydrates called fructans. And it's abundant in onions, garlic, and artichokes, just to name a few delicious sources.

But Dr. Ohhira's formulas also feature prebiotics--which is why they're the main line of probiotics I recommend.

Physician, heal thyself
Dear Reader,

News flash: According to a recent report, physically fit doctors who practice what they preach are more likely to urge their patients to take up regular exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Not that it takes a rocket scientist to figure that out. But I want to share the results of this "groundbreaking" study with you anyway. Because they make a whole lot of common sense.

This group of researchers drew data from 24 observational studies. The subjects were healthcare providers--doctors, nurses, pharmacists, even nursing and medical students. And results showed that their own fitness habits had a dramatic influence on the fitness advice they gave to their patients.

Four of these studies showed that physically active doctors are two to five times more likely than their sedentary colleagues to encourage their patients to exercise.

Other studies showed that doctors who had improved their own fitness also dispensed exercise advice more confidently and efficiently. Meanwhile, medical students who were trained to improve their own habits were also more likely to talk to their patients about exercise during exams.

I have to say, this certainly speaks to my own experience as a doctor.

Being fit myself absolutely helps me to give better advice. I can relate to any injuries that may occur from being more active. I can also teach my patients how to prevent those injuries from occurring.

That's why I often share my personal fitness stories with my patients... letting them know that I, too, used to hate exercising. And now? I can't live without it. In fact, I'm writing this after having taken two boot camps this week.

I can barely move. But it feels GREAT.

Many of my patients wish to reach my level of fitness. And while I still have a long way to go, I simply tell them that if they exercise five days a week and follow my New Hamptons Health Miracle consistently...they can look and feel this way, too.

I didn't make a pact with the devil to stay in shape. That's really all there is to it.

The other thing to keep in mind is the generation gap. The older generation of physicians who were less likely to exercise--and who may have even smoked--are retiring now.

Like often begets like. And a new crop of doctors with a healthier set of habits are taking over. I'm pleased to count myself among them.

At the end of the day, physicians have to be positive role models. They can't provide effective guidance otherwise. Because patients, at least in my experience, are much more likely to embrace health advice if their doctors look like they follow that advice themselves.

It's okay to dislike making changes. That's a part of human nature. But once new habits are formed, there's no going back. (Though someone might want to tell that to my arms, which I can't fully extend today.)

The bottom line: Just try it. You might be surprised at how much you end up liking it.

Dear Reader,

I've talked a lot about bisphenol A (BPA) here in the past.

It's a seriously toxic substance to your health. And I never drink or eat anything out of plastic because of it. I don't even touch cash register receipts now in my efforts to stay away from it. (Yes, those shiny receipts are hiding BPA.)

But I need to mention it again. Because a recent study I came across reinforces why BPA is so important to avoid.

It also touches upon a topic I wrote an entire book about. One that has personal significance to me: asthma.

For those of you who don't know, I had asthma as a child. And by changing my diet, I was able to prevent future episodes once and for all.

I have been able to do that same thing quite successfully with many patients. The entire program is outlined in my book, The Allergy and Asthma Cure. But suffice it to say that eliminating environmental toxins is a big part of the solution.

We tend to take the outside assault on our bodies and immune systems in stride--as if there's nothing we can do about it. But that's just not true. And if more people realized how much damage these chemicals could potentially do to us, I guarantee they would take greater measures to stay away them.

Which, of course, brings me back to BPA.

There has to be some reason that asthma rates have skyrocketed over the past 30 years. Diet is one smoking gun. And this new study shows that exposure to environmental toxins--and BPA in particular--also plays a big role.

Researchers investigated whether exposure to BPA in the earliest years of life could contribute to wheezing and asthma risk among children.

To do this, they estimated the BPA exposure of more than 500 children from a long-term birth cohort study. According to urine samples, almost 90 percent of the children had detectable amounts of the chemical in their bodies by ages 3, 5, and 7 years.

The researchers adjusted for secondhand smoke exposure and other risk factors linked with asthma. But BPA exposure was still associated with as much as a 50 percent higher risk of wheezing and asthma--even at lower levels.

And it's not the first study to reveal a link like this, either. Previous research has linked BPA exposure to respiratory issues--not to mention obesity, diabetes, and behavior problems.

That's the main reason why the FDA finally banned BPA in baby bottles and infant cups. (Unfortunately, long after our European neighbors made this move.)

But even with these restrictions, there are still plenty of sources of BPA still out there. As I said, cash register receipts are one of them--and so are the linings of food cans.

I can't stress this enough. Awareness of BPA is on the rise--but you have to remain vigilant nevertheless. Especially if you're a parent.

So next time your cashier asks if you want your receipt, decline. It only takes 10 seconds for BPA from your receipt to transfer to your skin. And crumpling it can speed up this process. (It's just as easy to keep track of purchases online these days, anyway.)

While you're at it, you should also avoid plastic containers, especially those that feature the numbers 3 or 7. Eat with glass, porcelain, or steel dishware--especially when drinking and eating hot food and beverages.

And absolutely cut back on canned food consumption. (This is something you should be doing anyway--processed "food" isn't my idea of food in the first place.)

With so many environmental toxins in our everyday life, being able to eliminate even a mild source could save lives. So please...do it for the children.

Until next time,

Dr. Fred
