Frozen assets
While we're on the subject of cancer prevention, here's a good way not to get results: eating frozen broccoli.

As you might remember, broccoli is the granddaddy of all disease-fighting foods. That's because it's rich in a compound called sulforaphane, which also happens to be a powerful anti-cancer agent.

There's a catch, though. This benefit is entirely dependent upon the presence of an enzyme called myrosinase, which is responsible for converting sulforaphane from another compound called glucoraphanin.

Needless to say, that little detail makes all the difference.

A team of researchers recently sampled three different commercial frozen broccoli products. Two of them showed no measurable myrosinase activity whatsoever. And no sulforaphane was formed in any of the products after a trip through the microwave.

I can't say this is surprising. A lot of frozen vegetables are blanched before freezing in order to extend their shelf life by halting enzymes that contribute to spoiling. But unfortunately, it's a pretty indiscriminate process.

That's a problem. Because the live enzymes in produce--and in cruciferous vegetables in particular--play a vital role in their disease-fighting benefits.

On the bright side, these researchers found fresh-picked, flash-frozen vegetables generated significantly more sulforaphane than their commercial counterparts. Although given their point of reference, well... that's not necessarily saying much.

Obviously, the best way to get the most nutritional benefits from any kind of produce is to buy (and eat) it fresh--and preferably organic.

One more tip when it comes to broccoli: let it sit for about five minutes after you chop it up, and before you eat or cook it. This activates myrosinase, which guarantees you'll get a maximum serving of sulforaphane in every bite.

But please...keep it out of the microwave. It's far too easy to nuke the nutrients right out of your food when you cook it this way. Instead, steam it on the stove.

Just put a little bit of water (an inch or two) into the bottom of a pot and bring it to a boil. Throw the broccoli into a steamer basket, add it to the pot, cover, and let it steam for about five minutes. Just long enough to make it slightly tender--and to keep as many of broccoli's beneficial nutrients as possible.

Ancient Aztecs believed this grain gave them
supernatural ENERGY AND POWER...
And maybe it did, in a manner of speaking.

Yet, when the Spanish Conquistadors looted and ruined the ancient Aztec Empire, this nutritional treasure all but vanished with it. The Spaniards named the grain Salvia Hispanica L and then it was promptly forgotten.

Well, so far it's just a colorful Aztec legend, right? But everything suddenly changed when...

500 years later, researchers finally started running tests...

And when the first results came in, they nearly fell over. Because these seeds tested off the charts!

The results clearly showed they had found a nutritional goldmine. And just for starters, this super grain turns out to be...
Fitness buffer
Dear Reader,

If this doesn't get you to the gym, I don't know what will.

According to a new study of more than 17,000 men, cardio-respiratory fitness (CRF) offers a good indication of cancer risk--and also risk of dying from cancer.

Researchers looked at links between fitness levels and rates of prostate, lung, and colorectal cancer. They also tracked later mortality rates among the men diagnosed with cancer.

The results were impressive, to say the least.

Among the most fit men, lung cancer risk dropped by 68 percent. And colorectal cancer risk dropped by 38 percent.

That's not all. On the other side of the spectrum, this study's authors also found that less fit men had a higher risk of cancer and heart disease--even if they weren't obese.

But even relatively minor improvements in fitness levels led to a 14 percent reduction in cancer mortality. Not to mention a 23 percent reduction in heart disease death.

The conclusion: Fitness strongly predicts the risk of lung and colorectal cancer in older men. And it's a pretty good indication of mortality risk among these men, too.

This is all pretty fascinating, isn't it? I mean, we've known for ages that physical fitness slashes risk of heart disease--so no news there. But any study that pits physical fitness against cancer raises the stakes into an entirely new level.

It's hard to argue with these results. Or to make any excuse not to exercise.

So I guess the real take home message from this is that everyone can live a longer, healthier life. You simply need to get moving.

Fat or thin--it doesn't matter. After all, thin people still get disease.

I know I often harp on the risks of being overweight. But that doesn't mean I'm letting anyone off the hook. And I hope you realize that what I write in this space applies to everyone, regardless of the numbers on the scale.

Good nutrition and regular exercise are essential for all of us. And consistency in both arenas is the only solution that really works.

During a follow-up exam two months later, the doctor asked, "What's going on" The cancer is melting away!" Another doctor compared her before-and-after X-rays and said, "This can't be the same woman. There's no cancer here!"

Blood pressure blunders
Dear Reader,

Looking back at this era of medicine 100 years from now is going to be very interesting. Because the fact is, we know way less about how to treat people than we think we do.

We just assume we're right about so many things. And yet, every day, new studies come along to prove just how wrong we really are.

I mean, just look at the enormous strides nutritional medicine has made in the past couple of decades.

Granted, it's still pretty fringe. But it went from being dismissed as quackery to being acknowledged as a valid a part of the conversation. All in a relatively short period of time.

My point is this: The business of medicine isn't static. The evidence is always changing. And in a perfect world, the way we treat patients changes with it.

Unfortunately, though, there are some misguided beliefs that I know are going to be tough to crack. And the general attitude toward dealing with high blood pressure is one of them.

I have never subscribed to the belief that blood pressure needs to be that tightly controlled. The same goes for blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and many other common health markers.

Don't get me wrong--we still have to monitor all of these things. But doesn't it seem funny to you that all of these conditions that we need to address so urgently are ones that we have medications for?

Think about it. When we didn't have statin drugs, we didn't worry about cholesterol levels--at least, not as much as we do now. And it's not as if we're saving more lives this way. We're just selling more drugs.

Yes, I am being a bit cynical this morning. But it's just too easy sometimes.

Case in point: A large new cohort study is now telling us that there is a bell curve when it comes to healthy blood pressure levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. As it turns out, heart disease rates increase at the lower end of the range as well as the higher one.

In fact, this study showed that the relationship between blood pressure and heart risk is inverted among older patients--with lower pressure linked to higher coronary heart disease rates among elderly diabetics.

We see similar U-shaped curves with regard to ideal levels of alcohol consumption. And it probably applies to many other things too. All of which suggests that maybe moderation really is the key to a long, healthy life.

In any event, the call to action here is obvious. Having tight control of blood pressure can be just as dangerous as having no control at all. So it's time we started paying attention to the problem with modern standards of treatment.

The lower-is-better approach to medicine is often too aggressive. And sometimes the adverse effects of this misguided strategy are worse than having slightly higher blood pressure.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen patients get better simply by removing some of their medications.

But unfortunately, physicians fear taking these drugs away. And it's typically for litigious reasons as opposed to health-related ones. So their patients stay medicated... and stay sick.

Don't let that happen to you.

There is simply no evidence to support lowering blood pressure under 130/80 mm Hg in people with diabetes. In fact, this study's authors advise keeping top numbers between 130 and 139 mm Hg and bottom numbers between 80 and 89 mm Hg.

It seems that 140 is the new 120. So if you're on blood pressure medication, please... discuss this with your doctor.

Until next time,

Dr. Fred

World's First NON-SURGICAL Joint
Replacement for Arthritis!

If you have arthritis - or know someone who does - you're going to love this new arthritis-reversing discovery that puts an end to joint pain without drugs and makes replacement surgery unnecessary.
A famous M.D. has created a revolutionary non-drug treatment that halts joint inflammation ... rebuilds cartilage ... and restores mobility in 30 days or less. I have high respect for this doctor and his discovery is definitely worth a look.
It's not some "miracle" supplement, doctor- administered procedure or unsubstantiated gimmick. On the contrary, hundreds of scientific studies prove that arthritis, joint pain and degenerating immobility can indeed be reversed with this remarkable all-natural approach.
Most orthopedic surgeons will tell you it's not possible because they're only taught about painkillers and joint replacement.
But here's what one surprised doctor reported after viewing the x-rays of a patient who underwent this new arthritis-reversing treatment:
"This patient displays a remarkable recovery. His x-rays show new cartilage where there was very little just one year ago..."
P.S. If you don't have arthritis, please pass this important message on to someone you know (and care for) who does.
