It's downright alarming how many doctors recommend gallbladder removal like it's just a routine, no-big-deal thing. But gallbladder removal should be your last resort. Why? Simple: you need your gallbladder.

But a new Mayo Clinic study put this subject in the spotlight again. The study leaned heavily on gallbladder surgery as the answer to painful flare-ups. But as I said above (and as I've said before), I wholeheartedly disagree with this course of action. But the study did make one interesting point--and it's something I've been saying for years. the fatty, processed foods that fill the Standard American Diet are a major contributing factor to gallstone disease. Maybe if doctors spent more time educating their patients about eating healthy, whole, natural foods, we'd have fewer folks rushing to the ER with gallbladder pain in the first place.

There's no question that gallstones hurt... they can cause "attacks" of pain that last from an hour to four hours, and occur when the gallbladder breaks the natural flow of bile from the gallbladder through the bile ducts. A lot of times, these attacks send people running scared to the ER.

If you get these attacks regularly, your doctor will likely recommend surgery with the nonchalance he uses when ordering his morning latte. But, I'll say it again:surgery should be your last resort (unless, of course, your gallbladder is diseased or ruptured).

Before submitting to surgery, take a closer look at what you're eating. There's no reason to cut fat entirely. But you should swap greasy, fatty foods for foods rich in healthy monounsaturated fats--like salmon, avocado, and macadamia nut oil.

I also recommend adding more alkaline foods to your diet, like cucumbers, broccoli and almonds. These foods are important because they even out your body's pH balance, lowering acidity. When your pH level is too acidic, it can create excess inflammation, which is a cause of gallbladder issues.

As you know, I believe strongly in the benefits of bacteria. It's a topic I've written about many times over the years. And now even mainstream medicine is starting to catch on. Researchers are examining the role of bacteria in all sorts of conditions--and finding some very promising results. In fact, a pioneering new study shows that bacteria may be the long-sought secret to curing cancer.

Scientists found that directly injecting Clostridium novyi, a common bacteria species that doesn't need oxygen to survive, into tumors shrunk or eliminated those tumors.

Not only that, but this bacteria could potentially bolster the immune system to continue targeting tumor cells for up to two years.

This new research is exciting. But it's not the first time bacteria have been linked to positive outcomes in cancer. More than a century ago, a bone surgeon named William Coley observed that some cancer patients who developed severe bacterial infections also experienced remission of their cancer.

So why did this idea disappear for 100 years? Well...huge drug companies came out with dozens of chemotherapy "advances" during that time. So, unfortunately, the answer just comes down profits and greed.

But back to the new research bringing bacteria into the spotlight once again.

In this study, bacteria were a virtually perfect cancer-fighting weapon. They were able to target stubborn tumor cells and destroy just the malignant cells while leaving normal tissue alone.

Am I telling you to go out and dutifully get a bacterial infection? No, of course not. But this is another reminder of a topic I'm passionate about: the importance of probiotics (hey, you're looking at the author of a book called Boost Your Health with Bacteria).

Step away from the plastic.

According to new research, increased levels of phthalates, chemicals found in plastic and some personal care products, are associated with significant declines in testosterone levels. And not just in men--but in women and children as well.

BAM!!! Another of my hunches proven correct. This has been my personal theory for years. And I'm glad research has finally proven it true.

But what still amazes me is that no one thought of this sooner. Or perhaps, no one wanted to ponder what the toxic soup we live in is actually doing to our bodies.

Consider the fact that cord blood from newborn infants has been shown to carry up to 300 toxic chemicals. How could the American medical establishment simply turn its back and think there's nothing wrong with that? That's what astounds me.

I'm beginning to think that not only does the medical establishment do its best to prevent doctors from thinking...they actually discourage it. With the advent of "evidence-based medicine," doctors are accused of doing something wrong, and even criminal, if they fail to follow the established "standard of care." And who provides the so-called "evidence" for these standards? You guessed it, pharmaceutical companies.

Anyway, back to the study. It found associations between urinary markers of phthalate exposure and testosterone levels among multiple age groups and in both sexes. Including children (specifically, 6- to 12-year-old boys and girls, and girls ages 12 to 20).

Multiple phthalates were associated with significant reductions in testosterone. The strongest association among females was in the 40- to 60-year age group. Their testosterone levels were reduced by as much as 24 percent due to phthalate exposure.

This is the age group I see the most at my office, and guess what? They always have low sex drive, can't lose weight, and are exhausted all the time. Low T explains all of that--along with impaired cognitive function, cardiovascular function, bone density, and overall well-being.

And it isn't only in women. Researchers in the study also found a 20.1 percent decrease in testosterone in men. And in boys ages 6 to 12, there was as much as a 29 percent reduction in testosterone.

Low testosterone is a serious public health issue that affects both sexes. Now, it's been proven to affect children as well. It's a sad state of affairs.

And a dangerous one, to boot.

Your entire family is at risk. And it's up to you to protect them. (I certainly wouldn't advise waiting for the medical or chemical industry to change... because I think you'll be waiting a long, long time.)

The first step is to steer clear of anything plastic. But also watch out for some hidden sources of phthalates--like perfume and shower curtains.

In something that I can only say "DUH!" to (why do I feel like I've been saying that a lot this week?), a new review published in the journal PLOS One found that a couple handfuls of tree nuts a day may improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How many years have you and I known this? And how many times do they need to keep reviewing the same old stuff? If anything, I suppose this is another chance for the people who have been hiding under a rock to finally get the message, loud and clear.

Not only can nuts help in type 2 diabetes, but they can also offer a variety of health benefits, including improving blood glucose control, lowering harmful LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, raising HDL cholesterol (the good kind), and lowering blood pressure.

This review specifically looked at studies of tree nuts, which include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts. (Notice that it didn't include peanuts. Despite being most people's go-to, peanuts aren't actually nuts--they're legumes.)

When the researchers pooled all the data they found that eating about 1/2 cup of tree nuts per day helped reduce both HbA1c and fasting glucose levels over the course of around 8 weeks.

It's also worth noting that some of the studies showing the most benefit investigated the effect of tree nuts as a dietary replacement for carbohydrates. Gee, where have I heard that before? Eat nuts and get rid of the highly refined carbohydrates. Seems an easy message to get out--but somehow...crickets.

Not only do tree nuts make a great, healthy replacement for carbs, but they're also rich sources of magnesium and monounsaturated fat. And both of these nutrients have been linked to improved insulin sensitivity. And, don't forget: the highest percentage of monounsaturated fat you can get comes from two of my all-time favorite foods: macadamia nut oil and avocado.)

The bottom line, as ever: Nuts contain protein, fiber, minerals vitamins and antioxidants as well as good, healthy fats. And eating 1/2 a cup of them each day will help keep your stomach full, your heart healthy, and your blood sugar balanced.

Instant noodles = oodles of trouble

I'm a foodie at heart. And you know I pride myself on making healthy eating delicious-and even fun. So I enjoy checking out food magazines and blogs for what's new. But recently, I came across an alarming trend: ramen noodles are back. And some of the trendiest restaurants in town are hopping on the bandwagon.

That's right, people are shelling out a pretty decent amount of dough for, well--dough.

The restaurant-made version is bad enough for you...But it pales in comparison to those cheapie cups of ramen noodles from the grocery store. Which are approximately as nutritionally sound as the Styrofoam they come in.

But, according to a new study, no matter where your ramen comes from, the nutritional news is not good. Of course, for me, this is a big DUH (the refrain of the week).

But the study's still worth noting, because the ramifications of eating this stuff are even worse than you'd think. The researchers concluded that consuming instant noodles two or more times a week increases the risk of cardiometabolic syndrome--especially in women. This syndrome increases the likelihood of developing not just heart disease, but diabetes and stroke.

The research focused on South Korea, which has the highest per-capita number of instant-noodle consumers in the world. Not surprisingly, South Koreans have experienced an alarming increase in heart problems in recent years, as well as a weight-gain epidemic.

Choosing instant noodles may be a quick, easy, and inexpensive solution in the short term. But, as this study shows (and as I've said before), this type of carb-laden fare won't serve you well in the long term.
