The vitamin duo statin drug
makers don't want you to know about
Dear Reader,

Now here's something that really drives me nuts.

A new study found that postmenopausal women who supplemented with calcium and vitamin D for two years had significantly lower LDL cholesterol levels than women who didn't.

Yes, I'm talking about significantly lower "bad" cholesterol. (Though it's not nearly as bad as the statin drug companies would have you believe. But that's a discussion for another day.)

Still, for people with serious cholesterol problems, this is big news. Calcium and vitamin D supplements are dirt cheap compared to pharmaceuticals. They can also kill two birds with one stone (by decreasing your risk for cardiac events and warding off osteoporosis).

Yet, sadly--and you probably know what I'm going to say next--this story broke with zero fanfare. You could hear a pin drop.

Granted, the drop in LDL cholesterol was small in this case--just 4.5 mg/dL. But I really don't see why that makes it any less newsworthy.

We're still talking about a statistically significant reduction. And you can bet that if a drug company developed a compound that lowered cholesterol so effectively, everyone in the U S of A would be forced into taking it.

Especially because, according to this new study, supplementation with calcium/vitamin D did more than just lower LDL cholesterol levels. It also lowered triglyceride levels. (And those are the nasty fats you do really need to worry about). Calcium and vitamin D also raised levels of "good" HDL cholesterol.

Just to put these benefits into perspective--the mainstream's favorite heart "remedy," statins, can't lower triglyceride levels. And they barely budge HDL levels. Statins are a one-trick pony. And the risks involved simply aren't worth the supposed "benefit."

Calcium and vitamin D, on the other hand, are essential nutrients your body needs to survive. And the fact that they also offer these significant healing benefits for your heart? Well, that's just icing on the cake.

So, how much do you need?

Well, as in most supplement studies, subjects with the highest blood levels of vitamin D fared the best.

These researchers considered vitamin D levels greater than 30 to be high enough to see a meaningful effect. That barely even qualifies as a "sufficient" blood level. Yet the subjects still showed significant improvements. So just imagine the benefits they would have seen had the subjects supplemented with enough to reach optimal blood levels.

The real level you want to achieve for optimal health is around 80. 2,000-5,000 IU of D3 is the minimum that I typically recommend--even with 20 minutes of mid-day sun every day. But if you're vitamin D deficient, you may need as much as 10,000 IU per day. As always, you should work closely with a doctor who can help you keep close tabs on your levels and adjust your dose accordingly.

As for calcium, I usually recommend my female patients take 500 mg in tablet form per day.

Until next time,

Dr. Fred

P.S. Calcium and vitamin D are really just two of the nutrients you need to keep your heart healthy. And statins are just one of the drugs you should avoid at all costs. To get the full scoop on ultimate heart health, check out my new report The World's Easiest Heart Disease Cure.

The hidden hazard of living longer
Dear Reader,

This winter was like the villain in a horror movie. Every time you thought it was dead, it clawed its way back. But after one more snowy setback last week, I think Spring hasfinally sprung here in New York. And I couldn’t be happier about it. Except for one important detail.

As soon as the temperature hits 60, people start worrying about slimming down for swimsuit season--and forget all about the rest of their health. Now, you know I applaud and encourage your efforts to drop any excess pounds you might be carrying around. But it’s absolutely critical not to let everything else slide in the meantime. Especially your immune health.

It might seem like winter poses more threats to your immunity. But the truth is, there’s a good chance your immune system is taking a major hit all year long.

In fact, right now, over 40 million adults are suffering from a condition called immunosenescence.

If you haven’t heard of it before, I’m not surprised. Scientists only discovered it 45 years ago (relatively recently, in the medical research world). And the research didn’t really pick up until the late 1990s. So there’s a lot we still don’t know about immunosenescence. But what scientists have found is frightening, to say the least.

According to one study, immunosenescence is directly responsible for the staggering toll the flu can take on older patients each year. And it’s the primary reason the flu vaccine is such a dismal failure in older people. In fact, people over age 65 account for more than 90% of the deaths from flu. Plus, older patients are at significantly higher risk of developing complications from the flu. Like pneumonia.

And immunosenesence automatically makes you more vulnerable to outbreaks of dangerous--even deadly--viruses. For instance, during the 2002 West Nile Virus outbreak in the U.S., the majority of the 4,156 cases occurred in people over age 50. And the average age of victims who died as a result of this outbreak was 78.

These are just two examples of the dangers immunosenesence poses to every single person over the age of 50. Research has also shown that this dramatic decline in immunity is a leading cause of painful shingles outbreaks. Not to mention the resulting post-herpetic neuralgia that can last for months--or even years--after the shingles rash has disappeared

And while there’s not as much hard-and-fast evidence quite yet, the statistics alone suggest immunosenescence may also play a role in some of today’s biggest killers. For example:
  • More than 60% of new cancers and more than 70% of cancer deaths occur in patients over age 65
  • Age is the No. 1 risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. And as life expectancy continues its upward trend, rates of this devastating illness are expected totriple in the next 35 years.

These consequences make sense, considering one of the hallmarks of immunosenesence is a dramatic increase in inflammation. And as I’ve told you many times before, inflammation is behind just about every chronic health problem there is--from heart disease to COPD to diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.

All this makes immunosenescence one of the most frightening--and dangerous--aspects of aging. It sneaks up on you without much warning. Which is why it’s one of the first things I check for in my patients.

The beginning stages usually begin to appear in your 50s. And they’re not as dramatic as you might think, considering the potential risks involved. You may feel tired, sluggish…or just plain “worn out”. In fact, most people chalk it up to “just getting older”. But obviously, it’s a lot more serious than that.

Both the CDC and NIH have admitted immunosenesence is a real threat. And three separate international conferences have convened to try and understand it.

But so far, they haven’t turned up any answers. Let alone any solutions. But I’ve been investigating immunosenescence for over two decades now. And what I’ve uncovered is vital information for every person over the age of 50.

I’m out of space for today. But stay tuned! On Thursday, I’ll tell you about three important factors I’ve found that exacerbate immunosenescence--so you can get a jump start on stopping its progression.

Until next time,

Dr. Fred

he war on complementary
medicine is costing us billions
Dear Reader,

The U.S. Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) recently commissioned an eye-opening report. It put some pretty shocking price tags on the money this country could save if the healthcare industry would only put more emphasis on prevention.

With all the concern over healthcare spending in this country, you would think a report like this would be making headlines left and right. But did you hear about it on the nightly news? Nothing but crickets, right? In fact, I read about this CRN report in an article about Australia, published in an international health journal (the same one I told you about yesterday). As far as I can tell, no major American media outlets reported the news.

Which is a shame, because there were more than a few priceless pearls of wisdom unearthed.

Like this one, for example. Apparently, the United States could save almost $4 billion in total costs related to heart disease over the next couple of decades. Simply by focusing more on prevention.

That's not all. This country could also save over $12 billion if all women diagnosed with osteoporosis over the age of 55 were prescribed calcium and vitamin D supplements.

And that's at the government's puny Recommended Daily Allowances. Could you imagine what this country could save if it encouraged women to supplement with optimal levels of these nutrients? (Which, for the record, are 500 mg of calcium and anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily.)

Of course, who would use all of that leftover Fosamax then? (You want to know why this report disappeared under the radar? Well there's your answer.)

Isn't it funny how the government is responsible for educating consumers--yet these reports come out and no one hears about them?

True, when it comes right down to it, you're the one who's responsible for your own health. But it still falls on the government to disseminate the correct information so that you can make those decisions appropriately.

So I have to give Australia some credit. At least they're aware of the biased nature of the dialogue Down Under. They know some groups would rather see alternative approaches to health and wellness stay on the fringes.

And Australia's Complementary Healthcare Council (CHC) doesn't hesitate to call these groups out when they start slamming the supplement industry.

Here is a refreshingly on-point quote from Carl Gibson, head of the CHC: "We've always had detractors and naysayers, and it doesn't help when friends of science and medicine make a concerted effort to make sure that complementary medicines are attacked constantly."

Gibson points out that some members of the conventional medicine lobby in Australia even go so far as to write to universities and urge them not to offer courses in alternative medicine.

It's outrageous. And I assure you, the same kinds of attacks are happening over here.

This is why we have to continue to fight back. Alternative medicine has a lot of enemies. And they'll do anything and everything in their power to deny people access to natural medicine and other holistic approaches--simply because they're not the "standard of care."

But our detractors invented the standard of care. (And not always for the right reasons, as you well know.) So of course they're going to try to shoot down anyone who disagrees. And unfortunately, we are pretty outnumbered in this war.

Luckily, we have some great allies in Congress and the Senate. They won't be there forever, though. So please, write to your own congressperson or senator now to defend your right to make your own medical choices.

It's easy. Just tell them your success stories. I know you've got them--so write them down, and share them with your elected officials. It only takes a few minutes. But it will make a huge impact on helping to keep our medical freedom of choice alive.

Just be sure to share your success stories with me while you're at it--either throughmy website, or on Facebook. Because like I'm always telling you, reading them really is the best part of my day.

Until next time,

Dr. Fred
