Americans Take More Than 4 Billion Doses Of Pharmaceuticals A Year

American citizens are taking more prescription drugs than ever. The latest statistics available show that in 2011, the U.S. population took 4.02 billion prescriptions that cost a staggering $319.9 billion. These numbers and others appear in the annual profile of top prescription medicines noted in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience.
We overmedicate ourselves. These numbers show that the U.S. now consumes 127 prescriptions a second. That costs more than $10,143 every second or about $876 million a day.
